I got to thinking and I don't remember anyone in my family ever playing Bridge....not ever! We played Checkers.....,
I got a Chess set in school, we had a school teacher that moved to the country from New York City, he took it upon himself to teach us Redneck children the game of Chess...but my parents never advanced beyond basic Checkers.... hell we fought a war so we didn't have to play Chinese Checkers you know........
But every old movie and tv show has the pretty people playing Bridge... Did Bridge not make it that far back into the hills..... But wait, I grew up in the swamp, maybe that's the problem, maybe hill-folk learned Bridge and us Swamp People just had Checkers and 21.
21 you say, well most folks call it Blackjack, but the Baptist think you're going to HELL if you don't call it 21, and have anything beyond match sticks at stake.....
Now that you mention it, we played Rummy as well...... I think some people call it Gin Rummy, but Baptist are so against the alcohol that the Gin got cut off.....less you go to HELL and we just had Rummy. Hmm, I wonder if they added the MY so as the Rum wasn't by itself to tempt them Baptist boys into sin......
So, life in the Swamp meant Checkers, Rummy and 21.....so who the heck played Bridge? My Black friends (yes I have those...black family members too - despite what I hear on Facebook) taught me the game of Spades. I have spent many hours playing Spades..... technically I was the Supervisor on Night Shift and we were at lunch....
Did you know Spades is sort of the Checkers to Chess...... They say Spades is similar Bridge, but not as complicated..... I wonder if you can play Bridge and drink Hennessy..... cause it goes down smooth with Spades.
What games did you grow up playing......
