The picture with this post shows white lines on a football field, and a vehicle running a Red Light. This morning on my way home I witnessed a truck and car blow through a light well after it turned Red. They not only broke the law, but also put lives (their own included) in danger. It got me to thinking.......
I coach football, last practice I made the entire team run because 1 player did not touch the white line in a drill. When they ran the drill the second time the player missed the line again....so the team ran again.
We ran the drill again, .....and the player missed the line again, so the team ran again. That time the offending player upset from running 40 yards for a 3rd time wanted to know who didn't touch the line...... My reply - You!!! You are the person not touching the line!
The player was upset, he had put his hand down every single time beyond the white line.... In his mind he did the right thing, but that wasn't the drill. The drill was to touch the white line...... Coaches design drills to teach, one of the things players have to learn is to do exactly what is requested.....not almost what was asked, but exactly what your job was to do......
In the military marching plays a huge role..... I have heard many people mention how dumb it is to waste so much time learning to march, when that time could be spent teaching military skills. Here is the secret, following directions is important in every aspect of life. When the military drills marching, they are not teaching you to walk.... they are teaching you follow directions without questioning..... So when your commander says DUCK, you dive for cover, instead of asking, "why" (as the bullet ends your life).
Is it important the football player touches the line..... nope. Other than not having the discipline to do what was requested. Holding yourself accountable is an important part of society thriving.
When I started driving 40 some odd years ago, if you went through an intersection on a yellow light you were a rebel. Today America has raised generations of folks that were never taught to touch the white line every drill.......and you will routinely see people enter an intersection well after the light has turned RED.
We have all heard that if you cannot trust people with little things, how can you trust them with big stuff..... Society in general needs people to touch the white line every trip down the field. The world doesn't go to hell in a hand basket in one swift motion, but society fails in little baby steps.......
So, will you commit to touching the white line?
