Sugar and Spice......

Story time: ..........kind words are free!!!!!!!! I have 5 kids, over the last 21 years they have caused me to spend a lot of money, but you know what cost me not a single penny? Saying I love you, or that I am so proud of you, or maybe I appreciate you for.........

Sometimes I tell my wife I love you too much, and I hear ".....if you love me I wouldn't have to ask you to do this.....or that" Well, she isn't wrong, but I do love her, I just don't like cleaning, or following directions or her mother.

So if kind words are free......why are they the one thing our employers don't like to share? For years I have both given and received yearly evaluations. For those of you not in management positions we managers are instructed by our superiors....and HR that we are to seldom if ever give any marks above Meets Expectations.....

One time a year we sit down and talk to the people we depend upon to make our company successful and all we end up doing is leave them feeling pissed off, and not appreciated!

When you have an employee that never misses, never comes in late and will stay over to help get the job out....she/he is not a MEETS employee, she is a rockstar and Exceeds Expectations. Telling her how much she is appreciated cost nothing, and will go a long way in making her feel appreciated.

Money is nice, but employees will forget about that raise after just a few checks.....the fact you tell them you appreciate them will last the year long, especially when they hear it often, and on their annual review. But, management handcuffs the entire organization with the silly thought that we cannot tell our workers they are GREAT.

I have often considered writing a book intitled: Fat Manufacturing based on treating people the right way, and not some silly concept that the bottom line, is the most important thing to meet.

Yes, companies must make a profit, but employers should also treat their employees the right way!

I have had a few bad bosses, in my life....how about you, who was your worst boss and why?
