Living on the Air

Story time: .......do you remember WKRP in Cincinnati? The theme song reverberates in deep creases of my mind, "..... Baby if you've ever wondered, wondered what became of me. I'm living on the air in Cincinnati,..........."

I listen to the radio everyday, and have since I was a kid. At night when I should have been asleep for hours I had a transistor radio under the covers listening to the skip and picking up West coast Major League baseball games well pass midnight.

In a high school play I played Earl E. Bird, a radio DJ/news reporter. My high school job was at Jon Barry Training Stables' where a country radio station played 24/7/365. So when it was time for college it just made since I sign up for a class called, "Introduction to radio" a class in which you learned the basics to working at a radio station.

We left a radio playing in our farm's barns all the time, thinking it might scare away predators,.....Dr. Laura Schlessinger radio show played most nights after midnight (that would scare me away).

The radio brought so much into our lives. Jack Buck and Mike Shannon were the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals.....the stories they told were so GREAT we didn't mind rain delays.

Casey Kasem and Bob Kingsley brought the top 40 songs to me every week. Many times I sat by the radio with a cassette tape to record the hottest songs (thinking - why can't the DJ shut up and don't talk over my music.

Everyone loved Paul Harvey..... we were simple country folk, I don't think most of us realized he was actually doing commercials when he talk about one product or another. To us it was like a trusted friend suggesting we buy a Bose radio or maybe a Sleep Number mattress.

Rush Limbaugh, grew up just 25 miles down the road from our family farm. He first worked in radio on the Cape Girardeau station KGMO, of course he rose to international fame in the 1980's. I have heard it said, his show saved AM radio. I loved Rush.....he was saying what everyone I knew was thinking or saying around the kitchen table.

Radio has added so much to our lives...... I sort of feel sorry for kids these days, all the legends I just mentioned are gone.....their voices silenced, and yet their memories will continue on for decades when we think about the good things in life......

Are you a radio person? What do you listen too?

I stopped listening to music in 1994, suffering from a broken heart I just couldn't listen to music.....

Until: Shania Twain sang "From This Moment On"...... that song described the love Tonya and I had.....
