Let me set the stage, years ago I was in an automobile accident, caused by the other driver. At first I wasn't concerned, everyone had insurance.....and then I began to learn hard lessons.
I was poor, my truck was old and I only had liability insurance. So regardless who caused the accident my insurance company was not going to be involved. However, my agent pointed out if I carried full coverage insurance they would have fixed my truck....and then together we could battle it out with the other driver's insurance company. It was my first lesson in life about being protected by insurance......
If you know me (thousands of people read my post that don't know me) my mom died after years of living with dementia. Her dementia came to light after a home fire.... (a case where she was not properly insured) resulting in a loss of over $100,000. It was a hard lesson on the importance of being properly insured.......
This brings me to the St. Louis tornado, sadly many people had their homes damaged, with some completely destroyed and even more damaged to the point no one could live there without spending ten's of thousands, maybe hundred thousands of dollars in repairs.
This is where the debate begins...... for some reason there are people that think the government should rebuild the storm victims' homes......
Why......
Why is a great question, like why would you own a home and not be insured.... or Why would you think the government should be paying for anyone's repairs...... or....... Why do I think the way I do (besides being normal).
This is your opportunity to jump in, sound off, what do you think? It was a tornado that destroyed those homes, ....it could have been an earthquake, a fire....... there are countless ways a person's property can be destroyed.....so why do people feel it should be the government's responsibility to make them whole?
At what point do we understand personal responsibility? Then again, at what point do we help our neighbors..... Will my friends on Facebook lean one way or the other.....and regardless of which way they fancy, can their opinions be justified with words?
2,600 years ago it was Hercules that said, ".....the gods help them that help themselves." I can't help but think that translates into, "buy insurance!"
