I often tell stories that are about practical jokes I have played a roll in pulling off. But, this story I just had a front row seat to see how it played out.
When you grow up on a farm grass, especially grass in your yard is of low value. My dad loved July and August when high temps and very little rain fall meant the grass did not grow, and we did not have to mow it.
When you encounter a farm with a thick full lawn, you can bet it is because of just a few reasons 1. City folk recently bought a farm house and they are still operating in "subdivision land." 2. The kids are grown and gone and the farm wife is bored...... 3. A friendly competition between neighbors has turned into a full blown war
Today's story is about the grass war. Many small towns pass out an award each month for the best looking yard. Thanks giving through Christmas lawn decorations played a major portion of who wins.
The winners of spring and fall months often come down to flowers......
Summer, especially the hottest months are ruled by green, full.....well maintained grass. In the 1980's in the months of April and May when ever a local family left town (especially before a rain shower) a neighbor applied a fertilizer treatment to the yard...... If it didn't rain, he would water the lawn....
Between April 1st (what a joke) and mid-May he applied over 100 lbs of 12-12-12 fertilizer. The ground was so fertile you could practically see and hear the grass grow..... By July when you had to water the lawn, it would grow several inches over night with each watering......
The Grass War of 1987.......
So, who's lawn are you going to "help" grow this year...... We haven't lived in a subdivision since 2015, but we did from 1999 until March of 2015. During those years, I did play a few games.......
My Grass War was clover......... did you know you get almost 5 lbs of clover seed in a pair of shorts...... then when you go for a walk, all you have to do is take a few steps onto the lawn and dump the clover seed from your pockets......
A couple weeks later, and clover is every where....... Uh, no winner of the month for them, at least not that month.......
If the names Danny and Shelby mean anything to you......then you know who had the Grass Wars.
